I think I have once wondered why do the butterflies show that behavior when I was young. To answer this question, I would like to introduce how do butterflies stick to branches during metamorphosis, shifting away from the more severe environmental topics Iโ€™ve previously explored. 

 

What is the discovery?

The main discovery is that the butterfly silk was actually โ€œweaker and thinnerโ€ than previously expected, and the way caterpillars spin and structure silk contributes to chrysalis attachment rather than the strength of silk. 

 

 

What is butterfly metamorphosis?

Butterfly metamorphosis involves a caterpillar taking off its skin to form a chrysalis and eventually emerging as a butterfly. During metamorphosis, the chrysalis must stay securely anchored to the right spot of the yolk to ensure the butterflyโ€™s proper development. 

 

 

What is the methodology?

  • Researchers raised two species of butterflies (Danaus chrysippus and Papilio polytes) and two species of silkworms.
  • They collected and measured the silk threads used to attach chrysalises to branches or form cocoons.
