월요일이 성큼 왔다. 더운 여름이라 몸 속에서부터 푹푹 찐다. 한국처럼 밖에 나갔을 때 숨이 턱 막히고 시원한 곳에 들어갔을 때 땀이 주르륵 나는 그런 더위는 아니다. 여기는 말하자면 한 45도 되는 한증막 같다. 몸 내부에서부터 뜨뜻하게 뎁혀지고, 그 열이 오래 간다. 여간해서는 땀이 잘 나지는 않는데, 아무래도 사막기후에 영향을 받았기 때문에 그러하다. 아무리 태평양이 코앞에 있다고 하더라도 훅훅 더운 열기가 서부를 휘감는다. 덥다.
월요병을 치료하고자 이 글을 써본다. OC는 오렌지 카운티의 약자이고, 오렌지 카운티에는 여러 도시들이 있는데 그 중에서도 이곳 어바인이 오렌지 카운티에서도 유명한 도시이다. 말그대로 원래부터 오랜지를 기르던 농장이 많았던 곳이라 오렌지 카운티라고 한다. 지금은 이곳 저곳 많이 개발이 되었다고 하던데, 서울에서 살다 온 사람의 입장에서 봤을 때 이곳은 개발 기회가 무궁무진하다.
엘에이에서는 남쪽으로 한시간 정도 떨어져 있고, 가족 친화적인 분위기 때문에 저녁에는 대부분 밖에 돌아다니는 사람들이 없다. 안전하기도 하고, 가끔은 무섭다. 요새같은 7월에는 해가 8시 반 정도에 지기 때문에 저녁 6시 7시에도 수영장에는 사람들이 가득하다. 비가 자주 내리지 않고, 1년 내내 기온 차이가 상대적으로 크지 않기 때문에 이 곳은 상당히 축복받은 땅이다. 살기 좋고, 은퇴한 사람들이 와서 살고자 하는 곳에 속한다 (샌디에이고 포함)
아이가 "엄마 수영가자" 하면 나는 "아가, 너가 중이염이 아직 완전히 치료가 안되었는데 바다가서 파도 보고 놀면 어떨까?" 하는 럭셔리한 대화를 할 수 있는 곳이 바로 여기다. 나 혼자 이곳에 살았다면 아마 근처에 얼씬도 하지 않았을 가족 친화적인 수영장이 어바인 동네에 수십 수백개다. 동네마다 관리비를 따로 내는데 한달에 300달러 정도 내면, 이런 커뮤니티 시설 (바베큐, 수영장, 자쿠지, 헬스, 테니스장 등)을 이용할 수 있다. 아이 데리고 풀장에 가는 것도 예약부터 큰 일인데, 이곳에 살면 그런 걱정은 하나도 없다. 어제는 해가 좀 질 무렵, 저녁 5시쯤 아이를 데리고 수영을 하러 왔고, 지난주에는 아이를 데리고 크리스탈 코브에 가서 파도를 쫓으며 놀았다. 환상적이고, 천국이 있다면 이곳이 아닐까 싶다.

I’m writing this to combat the Monday blues. OC stands for Orange County, and Irvine is one of its most famous cities. The name Orange County comes from the many orange farms that used to be here. Nowadays, there has been a lot of development, but from the perspective of someone from Seoul, there are still endless opportunities for growth.
Irvine is about an hour south of LA and has a family-friendly atmosphere, so you don’t see many people out and about in the evenings. It’s safe, and sometimes eerily so. In July, the sun sets around 8:30 PM, so even at 6 or 7 PM, the pools are full of people. It doesn’t rain often, and the temperature is relatively consistent throughout the year, making this place quite blessed. It's a great place to live and a popular destination for retirees (including San Diego).
When my child says, "Mom, let's go swimming," I can reply, "Honey, your ear infection isn’t completely healed yet. How about we go to the beach and watch the waves instead?" This is the kind of luxurious conversation we can have here. If I lived here alone, I probably wouldn’t even consider the family-friendly pools, but there are hundreds of them in Irvine. Each neighborhood has its own maintenance fee, around $300 a month, which grants access to community facilities (BBQ areas, pools, jacuzzis, gyms, tennis courts, etc.). Taking a child to the pool is a big deal, from making reservations to actually going, but living here eliminates those worries. Yesterday, around 5 PM as the sun was setting, I took my child to the pool, and last week, we went to Crystal Cove to play by the waves. It’s fantastic and feels like heaven on earth.
