A catastrophic fire broke out on Wednesday (11/26) at Wang Fuk Court, a densely populated public housing estate in Hong Kong’s Tai Po district. The blaze spread across multiple high-rise towers within hours, which overwhelmed residents and firefighters.

I personally feel really sorry for the residents who suffered due to this fire. While conducting a research for this incident, the thing that I barely understand was why the fire alarms had been turned off in the first place. With renovation work underway, a situation where construction materials can easily become fire hazards, how could they overlook that risk? The failure to account for many potential dangers that can arise during the construction seems that the contractors deserve criticism.

이번 사건에 대해서 개인적으로 너무 유감이라고 생각한다. 정말 많은 분들이 피해를 보셨고, 피해 비용도 막대하니까.. 이번 기사에 대해서 조사하면서 가장 이해가 가지 않았던 부분은 왜 화재 경보기를 꺼놓았는지에 대해서다. 재건축 과정에서 건축 부자재가 화재를 일으킬 수도 있는 상황인데, 그런 상황을 고려를 못했던 건지 왜 화재 경보기를 왜 꺼놓았을까? 건축 과정에서 일어날 수 있는 다양한 상황에 대해서 고려를 안 했던 점에서 공사업체는 비판받아 마땅하다고 생각한다.
