What is the issue?

A new “hypertropical” climate is emerging in the Amazon rainforest.

That is, the Amazon is no longer experiencing just occasional droughts. Instead, it is gradually shifting into a much hotter and drier climate state, which is called a hypertropical climate, that goes beyond what scientists consider a normal tropical forest environment. These conditions give extreme stress on trees and weaken the forest’s ability to absorb CO2.

Extreme hot droughts are becoming more frequent and intense.

Recent years have seen more days of unusually high temperatures combined with severe droughts, even during the wet season. Studies show that these “hot drought” events significantly increase tree mortality, with tree death rates rising by about 55% compared to normal conditions.

이러한 변화의 원인은 무엇인가?

인간 활동으로 인한 기후변화가 가뭄을 길게 만들고 기온을 높이고 있다. 온실가스 배출로 인해 지구가 따뜻해지면서, 아마존의 건기가 더 길어지고, 기온은 과거의 평균 범위를 넘어 상승하며, 토양 수분은 나무가 버티기 힘든 수준까지 감소하고 있다. 

토양 수분이 정상 수준의 약 3분의 1 이하로 떨어지면, 나무는 더 이상 제대로 기능하지 못하고 광범위한 스트레스와 고사로 이어진다.

How do hot droughts kill trees?

Trees either starve or suffer hydraulic failure.

Under hypertropical conditions, trees close their leaf pores to conserve water, which also shuts down carbon dioxide intake, leading to carbon starvation. Moreover, air bubbles form in the tree’s water transport system (xylem), similar to embolisms in humans, causing hydraulic collapse.

Fast-growing, low wood-density trees are especially vulnerable, meaning secondary forests are at higher risk.

고온 가뭄은 나무를 어떻게 죽이는가?

나무는 ‘굶어 죽거나’, ‘수분 공급 시스템이 붕괴된다’. 

하이퍼트로피컬 환경에서는 나무가 수분 손실을 막기 위해 잎의 기공을 닫게 되는데, 이 과정에서 이산화탄소 흡수도 함께 차단되어 결국 탄소 부족 상태에 빠진다. 또한 나무 내부의 물관에 공기 방울이 생기는데, 이는 사람의 혈관에 생기는 색전과 비슷해 수분 전달을 멈추게 만든다. 특히 성장이 빠르고 목질 밀도가 낮은 나무들이 더 취약해, 2차림(벌채 이후 다시 자란 숲)이 더욱 큰 위험에 노출된다.

Why does this matter globally?

The Amazon’s weakened carbon absorption accelerates climate change.

Tropical forests absorb more human-generated carbon dioxide than any other biome. When trees die, the forest absorbs less CO2, atmospheric carbon levels increase, and climate warming accelerates. Recent droughts in the Amazon have already been linked to measurable rises in global atmospheric carbon dioxide.

왜 전 세계적으로 중요한 문제인가?

아마존의 탄소 흡수 능력 약화는 기후변화를 가속한다. 

열대우림은 전 지구 생태계 중 인간이 배출한 이산화탄소를 가장 많이 흡수하는 지역이다. 그러나 나무가 죽으면 숲이 흡수하는 CO2의 양이 줄어들고, 그 결과 대기 중 탄소 농도는 증가하며 지구 온난화는 더 빠르게 진행된다. 실제로 최근 아마존의 극심한 가뭄 이후, 대기 중 이산화탄소 농도가 눈에 띄게 증가했다는 보고도 있다.

What could happen next?

Hypertropical conditions may dominate by 2100, but outcomes still depend on us.

If emissions remain high, hot droughts could occur up to 150 days per year by 2100. Furthermore, extreme conditions may persist year-round, even during wet seasons, and similar climate shifts could emerge in tropical forests in Africa and Southeast Asia. However, researchers emphasize that reducing greenhouse gas emissions could slow or limit the spread of this new climate regime.

앞으로 어떤 일이 벌어질까?

2100년에는 하이퍼트로피컬 기후가 일상이 될 수도 있지만, 결과는 우리의 선택에 달려 있다.

온실가스 배출이 계속된다면, 2100년에는 고온 가뭄이 연간 최대 150일까지 발생할 수 있으며, 극단적인 기후가 우기까지 이어질 가능성도 있다. 또한 이러한 변화는 아마존을 넘어 아프리카와 동남아시아의 열대우림으로 확산될 수 있다. 하지만 연구자들은 지금이라도 온실가스 배출을 줄인다면, 이러한 새로운 기후 체제로의 전환 속도를 늦추거나 그 영향을 제한할 수 있다고 강조한다.

I had often heard that climate change was damaging the Amazon rainforest, but learning that an entirely new climate is emerging there was shocking all over again. Even in my own country, which once had four distinct seasons, it now feels as though only two remain: long summers and winters. While climate change itself may be inevitable, I believe the speed at which it progresses can still be slowed. That is why I see an urgent need to invest more deeply in environmental engineering and to develop innovative technologies capable of mitigating the pace of climate change.
