Welcome to our April ThanksLetter!
We're thrilled to share that our biodiversity project in South Korea, "Fly Again, Raptors" will reach a milestone on April 25th with the release of Eurasian eagle-owls back into the wild. Stay tuned for more details which we'll share on our social channels!
Our Cambodia pilot project, which we proudly shared last month, has sparked exciting new regional developments. We're thrilled to update you on outcomes from our Phnom Penh conference and the expansion of our large-scale projects in Vietnam. Across Southeast Asia, the transition to climate-resilient agriculture is accelerating, and Thanks Carbon continues to provide innovative solutions at the forefront of this change.
Quick Summary
- Post-Cambodia Conference: Multiple MOUs signed with provincial governments and field expansion underway
- Vietnam Scale-Up Milestone: 42,000 Hectares of Low-Carbon Agricultural Implementation
Leveraging Conference Momentum:Climate-Smart Agriculture Takes Root in Cambodia
The "Green Finance for Green Field" conference, held in Phnom Penh on March 24, quickly evolved from a successful event into concrete action. A particularly noteworthy achievement is that following the conference, multiple provincial governments across Cambodia have signed or are in the process of signing MOUs with Thanks Carbon, demonstrating a strong regional commitment to climate-resilient agriculture.
This promising progression illustrates how the conference served as a pivotal turning point for agricultural transformation across Southeast Asia. The collaborative approaches emphasized by key stakeholders at the conference—including H.E. Khy kosal (Under Secretary of State of MAFF Cambodia), Dr. Yorn Try (Deputy Director General of GDA of MAFF), and Shomi Kim (GGGI Cambodia Country Representative)—are now being put into practice.
At the conference, we invited officials from Provincial Departments of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (PDAFF) to demonstrate how AWD (Alternate Wetting & Drying) technology can facilitate the transition to sustainable agriculture while providing tangible benefits to farmers. The results from our Battambang pilot project—reduced methane emissions alongside increased yields, reduced pest and disease problems, and decreased fertilizer use—made a strong impression on local authorities and are now translating into concrete partnerships.
Thanks Carbon has received collaboration requests from several regional leaders and is conducting site visits and discussions:
- April 9: Farmer consultations and irrigation infrastructure assessment in Kampong Chhnang and Pursat Provinces
- April 10: MOU signing completed with Kampong Thom Province PDAFF
- April 11: MOU signing scheduled with Battambang Province PDAFF
This progress is built on two core principles: "TRUST" and "COLLABORATION." Farmers don't adopt methods simply because they look good on paper. In Battambang, many farmers worried that draining their paddies would ruin crops or waste fertilizer. To address these concerns, Thanks Carbon:
- Conducted training in local languages, worked alongside farmers in the field, and established a "farmer leader" model to support the group
- Provided a multilingual app for tracking activities and sharing feedback
As farmers witnessed stronger roots, fewer diseases, and increased yields, trust was established—making all the difference in adoption rates.
Vietnam Scale-Up Milestone: 50,000 Hectares of Low-Carbon Agricultural Implementation
The Tay Ninh Province performance report meeting held on April 18 marked a significant milestone in Vietnam's climate-smart agriculture expansion. A total of 70 participants, including Vietnamese government officials, PoC participating partners, farmer representatives, and local farmers, gathered to share results from the implementation of AWD technology in the 60-hectare pilot project in Tay Ninh Province.
The event began with a presentation of the pilot project's outcomes, followed by in-depth discussions on implementation challenges, strategies for expanding AWD application, and farmer support policies. Farmers' expectations and requirements for adopting this approach were also shared, making the discussions practical and applicable.
Mr. Cooper, Director of Thanks Carbon Vina (Thanks Carbon's local subsidiary in Vietnam), captured participants' attention with a speech sharing Thanks Carbon's experience implementing AWD pilot projects in Vietnam and proposing a full-scale project spanning tens of thousands of hectares. Thanks Carbon will host another PoC performance report meeting in Kien Giang region on April 24, which is expected to be another positive forum for discussing the expansion of AWD methods.
These successful pilot projects have paved the way for significant scaling. Building on these results, the 42,000-hectare sustainable agriculture project will officially launch this fall in Tay Ninh Province, after completing all necessary procedures from the local authorities.
Vietnam PoC Project Status:
- Tay Ninh Province PoC
- Location: Chau Thanh and Trang Bang Districts, Tay Ninh Province
- Area: 60ha total (30ha each)
- Project Period: January-April 2025
- Achievement: Conditional cooperation agreement for 42,000 hectares expansion signed
- Kien Giang Province PoC
- Location: Giong Rieng District, Kien Giang Province
- Area: 50ha (approximately 50 farmers)
- Project Period: November 2024 - February 2025
- GHG Reduction: 174.25 tCO2eq./year (based on 50ha single cropping)
- Plan: 50,000ha collaboration MOU signing ceremony scheduled during the April performance report meeting
These large-scale projects represent concrete examples of applying the core triangle of 'sustainability,' 'economic viability,' and 'technological capability' to real agricultural contexts. Thanks Carbon's innovative technology dramatically lowers costs and enables high-quality carbon credit generation, supporting this expansion.
Data-driven agriculture and precision techniques like AWD are also transforming farmers' lives. As climate change impacts intensify, the spread of sustainable methods that reduce methane emissions and precision agriculture based on data are contributing to increased income for farmers while reducing their labor burden.
That’s all for this month’s edition of ThanksLetter!
We’re excited to share more updates with you in the coming months as we continue to grow and collaborate on climate solutions. In the meantime, feel free to connect with us through our website or social channels. See you in May!
