🌿 More Than Enough Newsletter #3 🌿
Hello,
I am Anne Perry, the representative of the More Than Enough (MTE) Community.
In September 2024, our MTE community took its first cautious but heartfelt step. Seven families gathered with the desire to create a community where children with diverse neurodevelopmental characteristics—including Autism Spectrum Disorder, ADHD, Dyslexia, and learning disabilities—could understand each other, be respected for who they are, and socialize together.
Most of our children experience many everyday things a little differently. Walking quietly, speaking softly, regulating emotions... each one of these things is not easy. Yet, the heart within them is warmer and truer than anyone else's. Day by day, our children show us that "difference is not a deficit, but simply another way."
For the past 10 months, we have continued to meet every Saturday evening in my living room. Amidst the amazing changes and moving moments, structural factors in the house we share with other tenants made it very difficult for the children to fully express their energy. Our love for our children cannot become a cause of suffering for others, so we have decided to secure a separate space to provide a safe and free environment.
This space will not just be a physical location; it will be a warm learning center for life where our children can breathe comfortably and where we can wait for their growth at their own pace.
As a first step toward this, we held a fundraising event on July 5th at a martial arts gymnasium in Langley.
Many people prepared and dedicated themselves to the fundraising efforts, which included a 🎈 Bouncy Castle, 🎨 Face Painting, and a side dish fundraiser (offering tteokgalbi, stir-fried anchovies, etc.) along with a garage sale. We received support and interest from many people.
There were various forms of participation, not only from families who attended the event in person. The stories of those who sent their support from afar were also very heartwarming. One mother, living far away on Vancouver Island, couldn't attend but purchased side dishes through an intermediary and donated them to neighbors in need. Furthermore, Big Buddy older siblings/cousins and their parents came and played a huge role by spending time with the young children to help the mothers who brought them to the event. This warm sharing and support are accumulating, helping our children to grow up with even warmer hearts.
In addition, we have begun filming a documentary titled “Flying with AI,” which tells the story of how neurodiverse children can overcome challenges through artificial intelligence and build free and fulfilling lives. Once the documentary production is complete, we plan to rent a movie theater to hold a screening, inviting politicians, journalists, and neurodiverse families. Through this work, we hope to convey the unique beauty and potential of these children to a wider audience.

2024년 9월, 저희 MTE공동체는 조심스럽지만 간절한 첫발을 내디뎠습니다.
어티즘스펙트럼, ADHD, 난독증, 학습장애 등 다양한 신경 발달 특성을 가진 아이들이 서로를 이해하고, 있는 그대로 존중받으며 함께 어울릴 수 있는 모임을 만들어 가고자하는 마음으로 일곱가정이 모였습니다.
대부분의 우리 아이들은 많은 일상적인 것들을 조금 다르게 경험합니다. 조용히 걷는 것, 작은 목소리로 말하는 것, 감정을 조절하는 것… 그 하나하나가 쉽지 않지만, 그 안에 담긴 마음은 누구보다도 따뜻하고 진실합니다. 아이들은 날마다 우리에게 “다름은 결핍이 아니라 또 하나의 방식”임을 보여주고 있습니다.
지금까지 10개월동안 매주 토요일 저녁에 저희집 거실에서 모임을 이어왔고, 그동안의 놀라운 변화와 감동의 한편으로, 다른 테넌트분들께서 같이 살고있는 하우스의 구조적인 요인으로 인해, 아이들이 가진 에너지를 충분히 펼치기에는 어려움이 많았습니다. 우리 아이들에 대한 사랑이 다른 이들의 고통의 이유가 될 수는 없기에, 안전하고 자유로운 환경을 제공하기 위해 별도의 공간을 확보하기로 결정했습니다.
이 공간은 단순히 물리적인 장소가 아니라, 아이들이 편안하게 숨 쉴 수 있고, 아이들 각자의 속도에 맞는 성장을 기다려줄 수 있는 따뜻한 삶의 배움터가 될 것입니다.
이를 위한 첫걸음으로, 지난 7월 5일 랭리에 위치한 무도 체육관에서 펀드레이징 행사를 열었습니다.
🎈 Bouncy Castle, 🎨 Face Painting, 그리고 떡갈비, 멸치볶음 등을 준비한 반찬 펀드레이징과 가라지 세일 등 기금마련에 많은 분들이 준비하고 헌신했고 많은 분들에게서 관심과 후원을 받았습니다.
행사에 직접 참여하러 와주셨던 가족분들뿐 아니라, 다양한 형태의 참여가 있었습니다. 멀리서 마음을 보내주신 분들의 이야기 역시 너무나 따뜻했습니다. 어떤 어머니는 멀리 빅토리아섬에 상아서 행사에 직접 오지 못하는데도 반찬을 대리구입하여 어려운 이웃에게 나누셨거든요. 또한 행사에 어린 아이들을 데리고 온 엄마들을 돕기위해 아이들과 같이 있어준 빅버디 형, 누나들과 그들의 부모님들께서 와주시어 큰 역할을 해주었습니다. 이런 따뜻한 나눔이 쌓여 우리 아이들이 더 따뜻하게 성장하고 있습니다.
또한, “AI로 날다” 라는 주제로 신경다양성을 가진 아이들이 인공지능을 통해 어려움을 극복하고 더 나아가 자유롭고 보람있는 삶을 만들어가는 이야기를 담은 다큐멘터리를 촬영하기 시작했습니다. 다큐멘터리 제작이 완료되면 영화관을 빌려 상영회를 열어 정치인, 언론인 그리고 신경다양인 가족분들을 초대하려합니다. 이 작업을 통해 더 많은 분들께 이 아이들의 고유한 아름다움과 가능성을 전하고자 합니다.

먼저 걸어 본 길 어렵고 힘든 길, 우리가 먼저 지나온 그 길. 돌부리 많고 비바람 불어도 발자국 남기며 걸어왔지요. 당신들은 더 쉽고, 더 행복하게 가시길. 우리는 울었고, 때론 웃었고, 포기하고 싶을 때도 많았지만— 그래도 담담히, 한 걸음 또 한 걸음. 보이지 않는 손이 당신을 인도하시기를. 그 손 따라 끝내 빛나는 곳에 이르시라.
