미국의 이란 침략: 부서진 평화, 다시 써야 할 미래

2025년 6월 21일, 미국의 벙커버스터가 이란의 핵시설을 관통했습니다. 미국의 이번 핵시설 타격 결정은 9.11 이후 더욱 강화된 반이슬람 정서와 2021년 체결된 중국과 이란의 포괄적 파트너십이 미국의 중동에서의 헤게모니를 위협할 것이라는 우려가 복합적으로 반영된 듯합니다.

하지만,  미국의 노골적인 불법 침략행위는 이란의 핵시설만을 파괴한 것이 아닙니다. 수십 년 간 축적해 온 평화의 노력들, 앞으로 지속되어 가야하는 평화의 가능성들을 파괴했습니다. 그렇기에 트럼프의 "눈부신 군사적 성공"이라는 선언은 더욱 무책임하고 끔찍합니다. 

국가 간의 경계, 인간과 인간 사이의 구분, 종과 종 사이의 경계는 실제로는 투과성을 지닌 얇고 연약한 막에 불과합니다. 한 곳에서 일어난 폭력은 파문처럼 이 세계 곳곳으로 퍼져 나갑니다. 이란에 떨어진 폭탄의 진동은 팔레스타인과, 우크라이나, 그리고 한반도의 사람들에게도 닿고 있습니다.

한 생명이 지구 위에서 사라지는 것은 하나의 세계가 완전히 사라지는 것을 의미합니다. 사랑하는 누군가를 잃어 본 사람이라면 그 상실의 무게를 모를 수 없습니다. 트럼프의 미국과 네타냐후의 이스라엘은 이 세계의 생명들을 연결하는 그물망을 찢고, 공존의 가능성을 무너뜨리고 있습니다. 다시 시작된 일방적 침략과 전쟁의 시대, 그 기운이 두렵기도 합니다.

‘상호의존성’은 추상적인 개념이 아니라 현실의 조건입니다. 숨쉬는 공기도, 마시는 물도, 먹을 음식도 모두 다른 존재들과의 복잡한 관계망 속에서 내게 옵니다. 피스모모의 '평화 커먼즈(Peace Commons)'의 비전은 이러한 성찰에서 출발했습니다.

평화는 누군가가 독점할 수 있는 재화가 아니므로 평화는 모두의 것이어야 합니다. 평화는 분할할 수 없는 전체이며, 모든 존재가 함께 누려야 하고 누릴 수 있는 것입니다. 평화는 사유화될 수 없는 무엇이므로, 한 사람의 평화가 다른 사람의 고통 위에 세워질 수는 없는 일입니다. 트럼프의 미국과 네타냐후의 이스라엘은 팔레스타인을 학살하고, 이란을 폭격하며 평화를 지극히 소수의 것으로 사유화하고 있습니다.

평화의 권리는 단순히 전쟁이 없는 상태를 의미하지 않습니다. 평화권은 다른 이를 해하지 않을 권리이며, 동시에 다른 이로부터 해를 당하지 않을 권리를 포함합니다. 평화의 권리는 개인적인 차원을 넘어서 집단적이고 종(種)적인 차원으로도 확장됩니다. 인간에게는 이 생태계에서 더불어 살아가는 모든 존재들과의 공존을 도모해야 할 책무가 있습니다.

폭력은 언제나 더 많은 폭력을 부르고, 증오는 더 깊은 증오를 낳습니다. 지금, 이 순간 인류는 제3차 대전의 가능성, 핵전쟁의 공포가 현실이 되어가는 것을 목도하고 있습니다. 깊은 절망감이 느껴지기도 하지만, 그렇다고 절망할 수만은 없습니다. 폭력의 논리에 맞서는 것은 더 큰 폭력이 아니라, 더 깊은 돌봄이며, 분리와 적대의 환상에 맞서는 것은 더 강한 군사력이 아니라, 더 섬세하고 다정한 연결이기 때문입니다. 

윤석열 정부의 내란이 성공했다면, 지금의 한국, 한반도, 동북아시아는 어떤 모습이었을까요? 계엄의 밤과 이어진 긴 겨울, 광장에 나섰던 사람들이 만들어 낸 지금의 한국 사회에서, 폭탄이 떨어지는 하늘 아래, 맨 몸으로 평화를 외치는 이란의 사람들을 보았습니다. 그런 용기는 어떻게 가능할까요?

평화는 이렇듯 폭력이 감히 어찌 해볼 수 없는 존엄함을 가졌습니다. 그 존엄함과 한 사람이 만들 수 있는 변화를 기억하면서, 서로의 얽힘을 통해 이 세계를 조금 더 평화로운 곳으로 만드는 일을 포기하지 않았으면 합니다. 포기하지 않는 내가, 또 당신이 곧 평화의 가능성이자 평화의 증거니까요.

The U.S. decision to strike these nuclear sites appears to be the result of a complex mix of factors: the heightened anti-Islamic sentiment following 9/11, and the concern that the comprehensive partnership between China and Iran, signed in 2021, will threaten America’s hegemony in the Middle East. However, the U.S.’s overt act of illegal aggression did not only destroy Iran’s nuclear facilities; it also destroyed decades of accumulated efforts for peace, along with the possibilities for peace that should have continued into the future. That is why Trump’s declaration of a “brilliant military success” is all the more irresponsible and appalling.

The boundaries between nations, between peoples, and between species are actually nothing more than thin, permeable, and fragile membranes. Violence that occurs in one place ripples outward throughout the world. The reverberations of the bombs that fell on Iran reach the peoples of Palestine, Ukraine, and the Korean Peninsula. The disappearance of a single life on Earth would imply the disappearance of an entire world. Anyone who has lost a loved one knows the weight of that loss. The United States under Trump and Netanyahu’s Israel are tearing apart the web of life that connects us all, negating the possibility of coexistence. The return of unilateral aggression and global war is a terrifying prospect.

‘Interdependence’ is not an abstract concept but a condition of reality. The air we breathe, the water we drink, and the food we eat all come to us through a complex network of relationships with other beings. The vision of PEACEMOMO’s “Peace Commons” stems from this reflection. Peace is not a commodity that can be monopolized by anyone; peace belongs to everyone. Peace is an indivisible whole, something that all beings should and can enjoy together. Peace cannot be privatized, and one person’s peace cannot be built on the suffering of others. The United States under Trump and Netanyahu’s Israel are slaughtering Palestinians, bombing Iran, and privatizing peace for the benefit of a select few.

The right to peace does not simply mean the absence of war. The right to peace includes the right not to harm others, as well as the right not to be harmed by others. The right to peace extends beyond the individual level to the collective and even the species level. Humans have a responsibility to seek coexistence with all beings that share this ecosystem.

Violence always begets more violence, and hatred breeds deeper hatred. Now, at this very moment, humanity is witnessing the possibility of a third world war with the specter of nuclear war next door. One may feel a profound sense of despair, but we cannot surrender to it. What stands against the logic of violence is not greater violence, but deeper care; and what stands against the illusions of separation and hostility is not stronger military power, but more delicate and tender connections.

If the coup by the Yoon Suk-yeol government had succeeded, what would Korea, the Korean Peninsula, and Northeast Asia look like today? In the long winter that followed the nights under martial law, and in the Korean society shaped by those who took to the streets, I saw the people of Iran standing under skies where bombs are falling, calling for peace with nothing but their own bodies. How is such courage possible? Peace has a dignity that violence dares not touch. Remembering that dignity and the change that one person can make, we hope to never give up on making this world a little more peaceful through our interconnectedness. As long as I do not give up, and as long as you do not give up, we are the very possibility and proof of peace.
