테슬라와 함께하는 자율주행. 

오늘 거의 15년만에 대학때 동아리 활동을 같이 했던 언니를 만났다. 이 언니가 미국에서 결혼해서 정착한 것은 알았지만 서부쪽에 있는줄은 몰랐고 정말 최근에야 어찌어찌 소셜 미디아를 통해 언니가 맨해튼 비치 쪽에 산다는 정보를 알았다. 참고로 어바인에서 맨해튼 비치까지는 안막히면 1시간, 막히면 1시간 반에서 두시간 정도 시간이 걸리는 거리다. 같은 태평양을 접하고 있지만 맨해튼 비치는 뭔가 압도하는 느낌이 있었다. 이 동네 살면서 이 동네 바다, 저동네 바다 구경하는 재미도 꽤 쏠쏠하다. 

진짜 말도 안되는 타이밍에 우리가 이렇게 나름 가까운 위치에 살고 있다니. 언니는 아이가 두명이라 이동이 쉽지 않은데 오늘은 다행히 내가 용기를 내서 움직일 수 있었다. 비밀은 바로 테슬라 자율주행.

자율주행 기능을 알게된 건 한주 정도 밖에 되질 않는다. 남편 말로는 테슬라 구매 시 평생 자율주행 기능을 구매하면 한 2만불 정도 추가로 지불해야 된다고 했다. 그리고 이것을 구독 모델로 전환하면 월 200불 정도라고 했다. 차 보험비, 차 리스비, 모기지, 생활비, 아가 어린이집 비용 등등을 생각하면 한달에 추가되는 200불은 결코 작은 돈이 아니다. 요새 테슬라가 현금 상황이 좋질 않아서 구독 비용이 획기적으로 줄었다고 들었는데, 그래서 지금은 100불 정도라고 한다. 200불에서 100불이면 거저쓰는 거 같은 기분이 드는데 암튼, 미국은 참 가격가지고 심리전에 능한 나라다. 

지난주 우연히 지인을 통해 이 기능을 알게 되었다. 울 남편은 자율 주행을 완전히 신뢰하지 않기 때문에 실은 운전할 때 전적으로 의지하지 않지만 내 경우는 달랐다. 핸들 오른쪽 레버를 두번 밑으로 당기면 (친한 친구가 나에게 도박에 빠진 것처럼 마치 빠칭코를 당기는 것 같다는 피드백을 주었다) 이 기능을 사용할 수 있다. 그 이후는 상상에 맡긴다. 아니 상상 그 이상이다. 자동차는 알아서 골목을 나가고, 고속도로를 주행하는데, 차선도 알아서 착착 바꿔준다. 규정 속도를 아주 잘지키며, 학교가 있는 곳에서는 25마일로 천천히 움직여주고, 여기저기 숨어있는 스탑 사인을 보면 절대 경찰에 잡히지 않게 시간을 딱딱 맞춰 세워준다. 주차도 해준다고 하는데 아직 이것까진 못해봤다. 

암튼 나는 오늘 이 자율주행 기능에 100% 의존하여 어바인에서 맨해튼비치까지 주행했다. 가는 길은 막히지 않아 한시간, 돌아오는 길은 막히는 타이밍이라 한시간 반을 소요했다. 핸들만 잘 쥐고 있으면 알아서 차선을 바꿔주고, 알아서 내가 원하는 곳을 가준다. 난 정말 너무 놀랐고, 진심 감사했다. 물론 이 기능을 함부로 신뢰해서는 안되지만, 적어도 8월부터 UCLA학교에 가야하는데, 적어도 이 차를 몰고, 이 기능을 장착한다면 학교는 힘들이지 않게 갈 수 있겠다 믿음이 생겼다. 아주 훌륭한 인생의 스승이자 코치인 나의 남편은, 이 기능을 맹신하지 말고 아주 기본적인 크루즈 모드부터 익숙해지는게 어떻냐는 제안을 했다. 왜냐면 우리의 무료 구독 기간은 1달 뿐이고 이것은 4월 말이면 없어지니까. ㅎ

2024년 4월, 우리가 각자의 위치에서 사는 삶의 모양은 다르지만, 뭔가 큰 변화의 흐름에 있음은 확신하게 느낀다. 내가 경험한 오토파일럿 기능, 챗쥐피티, 등등이 우리의 삶을 어떻게 변화시킬지 긴장 반 기대 반이다. 벌벌 떠는데 , 여전히 앞만 보고 가지만 이 모든 것이 어떤 큰 흐름속에 있음을 직감한다. 나는 오늘 참 만족했고, 새로웠고, 그리고 운전하는 스트레스를 획기적으로 줄여준 이 솔루션에 감사했다. 

Autonomous driving with Tesla.

Today, I met my old friend whom I hadn't seen since our college days, almost 15 years ago when we were both active in the same club. While I knew she had married and settled in the United States, I didn't realize she was living in the western part until very recently when I somehow found out through social media that she resides near Manhattan Beach. By the way, the distance from Irvine to Manhattan Beach is about an hour without traffic, but it can take anywhere from an hour and a half to two hours if traffic is heavy. Despite both being on the Pacific coast, Manhattan Beach had a certain overwhelming feel to it. Living in this neighborhood offers quite a bit of excitement, with its own beaches to explore.

It's truly unbelievable timing that we live relatively close to each other like this. My sister has two kids, so it's not easy for her to move around, but fortunately, today I had the courage to go see her. The secret? Tesla's autonomous driving.

I've only known about the autonomous driving feature for about a week. According to my husband, if you purchase the lifetime autonomous driving feature when buying a Tesla, it costs an additional $20,000 or so. And if you convert this to a subscription model, it's about $200 a month. Anyway, today I drove from Irvine to Manhattan Beach relying 100% on this autonomous driving feature. The trip there took an hour without any traffic, but on the way back, it took an hour and a half due to congestion. As long as you hold the steering wheel properly, it changes lanes and takes you wherever you want to go. I was truly amazed and sincerely grateful. Of course, you shouldn't blindly trust this feature, but at least from August, when I have to go to UCLA, if I drive this car and equip this feature, I feel confident that getting to school won't be difficult. My husband, who is a great teacher and coach in life, suggested not to blindly trust this feature and to start by getting used to the basic cruise mode, because our free subscription period is only one month and it will be gone by the end of April. Haha.

In April 2024, although our lives in our respective locations may look different, I feel certain that we're amidst a significant wave of change.
