Why Start Again at 60?

Growth Can Begin at Any Stage

As we gain more experience, we naturally become more confident in the ways we work.

We learn what works, develop our own routines, and become better at handling familiar situations.

But experience can sometimes make us less likely to question what we already know.

That is why growth is not only about gaining more experience.

Sometimes, it begins by looking at what we already know from a new perspective.

The story of Jeong Yak-yong, a Korean scholar and public official, offers an interesting example.

After spending 18 years in exile, he returned home in 1818. Four years later, at the age of 60, he looked back on his life and described this period as if he had been given a new beginning.

He did not erase his past.

Instead, he reflected on what he had experienced and considered how he wanted to live from that point forward.

His story leaves us with a simple question:

How can we turn what we have already experienced into the next step of our growth?

1. Experience Is a Starting Point, Not a Finish Line

Experience helps us work faster and make better judgments.

Over time, we develop knowledge, skills, and ways of working that help us deal with everyday challenges.

These are valuable assets.

But there is also a risk.

The more familiar we become with a certain way of doing things, the easier it is to assume:

“This is how it has always been done.”

The world around us keeps changing.

Technology changes. Customers change. Our jobs change. And the way we work together changes.

What worked well in the past may not always be the best answer today.

That does not mean we need to reject everything we have learned.

It means asking ourselves:

What should I keep? What should I rethink? What do I need to learn again?

Growth begins when experience becomes a foundation for the next step, rather than a reason to stop changing.

2. Reflection Matters When It Changes What We Do

We often look back after completing a project, attending a meeting, or dealing with a difficult situation.

We think about what went well and what could have been better.

Reflection is useful.

But reflection alone does not create growth.

Its real value appears when it changes what we do next.

It might mean asking a different question in the next meeting.

Trying a new tool.

Sharing information earlier with a colleague.

Listening more carefully before responding.

Or changing one small part of a familiar work process.

Small changes may not seem significant at first.

But repeated actions become habits.

Habits shape the way we work.

And over time, the way we work influences the culture around us.

A simple question can help:

What will I do differently next time?

Growth often begins with one small change in behavior.

3. Change What No Longer Works. Keep What Matters.

Growth does not mean changing everything.

As our work environment changes, we need to learn new skills and adapt to new ways of working.

At the same time, there are things worth keeping.

Taking responsibility for our work.

Respecting the people we work with.

Keeping our commitments.

Sharing what we know.

Continuing to learn.

Building trust through everyday actions.

The methods we use may change.

The tools we use may change.

Even the roles we take on may change.

But the principles that guide how we work can continue to provide direction.

Real growth requires both:

the flexibility to change what no longer works, and the judgment to keep what still matters.

What Would You Like to Begin Again?

Jeong Yak-yong’s experience at 60 reminds us that starting again does not mean starting from zero.

We carry our experiences with us.

Successes, mistakes, lessons, and challenges can all become resources for the next stage of growth.

What matters is what we choose to do with them.

Take a moment to consider:

What am I still doing simply because it has always worked before?

What is one thing I could try differently in the next 30 days?

What is one principle I want to keep, even as my work continues to change?

There is no single age or career stage when growth is complete.

Your next chapter can begin at any time.

Experience gives us perspective. Reflection helps us learn from it. Action turns that learning into growth.
