이곳저곳 미국 출장. 오늘은 달라스.

오늘은 달라스에 왔다. 달라스는 텍사스에 있는 큰 도시인데, 캘리포니아 어바인에서는 약 3시간 정도 떨어져있다. 시간대는 PST (PACIFIC STANDARD TIME)에 대비해서 약 2시간 정도 빠르다. 미국 내를 중심으로 비지니스를 하는 경우에는 보통 텍사스에 살면서 동부, 서부 시간을 맞추며 일하는게 효율적이란 이야기를 들었는데 다시한번 미국의 어마어마한 사이즈에 입이 쩍 벌어진다.

직장 동료와 같이 왔는데 이 친구는 2016년부터 미국에 정착한 이민 1세대 인도인이다. 워낙 지도가 왜곡이 되어 있어서 실제로 얼마나 인도가 큰지 가름하기가 어려웠는데, 그래서 친구에게 물어봤다. 인도가 큰지, 미국이 큰지. 아뿔사. 나의 무식이 바로 들통나 버렸는데, 친구는 당연히 미국이 크지, 미국이 인도보다 5배나 더 크다면서 나의 무식을 새로운 지식으로 채워주었다. 

내가 사는 쪽 지역에도 공항이 3개나 있다. 처음에는 우리 미국에 사는 직원들이 산타아나 공항을 선호한다고 해서, 도대체 산타아나는 또 무엇인지 뭘말하는 건지 이해를 아예 못했는데 이제 알겠다. 산타아나공항은 존웨인공항을 말하는 것이고, SNA 공항으로 통한다. 어바인에서는 20분밖에 안걸리는 아주 가까운 거리이고, 사람들 드글드글한 LA 공항, 소위 말하는 LAX보다 훨씬 편안한 느낌을 주기 때문에 여기 사람들은 가급적 산타아나에서 출발 도착하기를 원한다. 마지막 남은 공항은 LONG BEACH 공항이라 불리우는데 나는 미국에서 처음으로 버스 정류장 같은 공항을 봤다. 비행기가 뜨고 내리는데 왠지 그 자리에 버스가 있어도 괜찮을 것 같은 아담한 사이즈의 공항이다. 미국은 암튼 스케일이 상상 이상이다. 아마, 내가 중국에 살고 있다면 어쩌면 비슷한 생각을 하고 있을 지도 모르겠다. 암튼, 2시간만 넘어가면 주변 나라로 넘어갈 수 있는 지리적 이점을 가지고 있는 대한민국 사람은, 이렇게 2시간을 날아가도, 5시간을 날아가도 여전히 미국 땅에 있다는 사실이 신기할 따름이다. 

미국 사람들 중에는 한번도 미국 밖을 떠나지 않고 삶을 마감하는 사람들도 있다고 했다. 나는 처음에는 그런 사람들을 겁쟁이라고 칭했다. 그리고 미국만 알다 죽는 삶은 얼마나 재미없는가, 이렇게 생각했었다. 그런데 직접 미국에서 살다보니, 미국을 이해하고 탐험하기에도 상당히 빡세다. 자연환경도 어마어마하고 경험할 수 있는 문화의 폭이 상상 이상이다. 1년이 지난 지금도 주말에는 뭘할까, 어디를 가면 재밌을까 여행 계획을 세우는게 퍽 신난다. 그만큼 갈 곳도 많고, 특히 자연을 통해 힐링할 곳도 많다.

다시 현재 내가 있는 위치로 돌아와서.. 지금 내가 있는 이곳은 달라스다. 현재 저녁 10시 정도인데, 캘리포니아 시간으로는 저녁 8시 정도이니 와서는 한 2시간 정도 버렸다 했다. 그런데 내일 업무를 마치고 집으로 돌아가면 또 2시간 정도 절약하는 셈이니 참 하루가 빡세고 이상한 시간표를 따라 흘러간다. 지난번엔 휴스턴에 갔었고 이번엔 텍사스 달라스에 왔다. 원래부터 기름값이 싸고, 또 땅덩어리가 넓어서 건물이 띄엄띄엄 있다. 내가 있는 이 곳이 나름 중심가라고 하던데 어바인보다 한 3배 정도 공간을 여유있게 쓰는 것 같다. 최근에 캘리포니아 인구가 줄고, 다들 세금이 저렴한 택사스로 온다고 하는데  여기 사는 현지인들도 체감하는 모양이다. 집값도 계속 오르는 추세라고 한다. 

현재 달라스에서 인도인들이 제일 많이 거주한다는 FRISCO 지역에 와있다. 저녁 메뉴를 찾아보다가 인도인 동료가 신이 나서 추천한 곳에서 저녁밥을 배터지게 먹었다. 진심 어마어마한 인도 커뮤니티가 있다고 했고, 따라서 꽤 괜찮은 레스토랑도 많다고 했다. 다음에는 울 남편이랑 애기랑 같이 여행으로 와야지!! 생각했다. 이렇게 주워 들은 것을 기록으로 남기지 않으면 새까맣게 잃어버리고 만다. 새로운 여행이 신나고 들뜨면서도, 내가 하는 업무를 안전하게 그리고 멋지게 소화해내고자 하는 마음과 긴장감도 그만큼 크다. 내일 안전하게 해내고 집으로 가서 울 아들 봐야지! 아자아자!

Now I get it: Santa Ana Airport is John Wayne Airport, also known as SNA. It's a mere 20-minute drive from Irvine and is much more pleasant than the crowded LAX (Los Angeles Airport), which is why people here prefer flying in and out of Santa Ana. The last airport is Long Beach Airport, which felt like a bus station to me the first time I saw it. It's a quaintly sized airport where it wouldn't seem odd if buses were coming and going instead of planes. The scale of the U.S. is indeed beyond imagination. Perhaps, if I were living in China, I might have a similar impression. As a South Korean, accustomed to reaching a neighboring country in just over two hours, it's fascinating that even after flying for 2 or 5 hours, I'm still within U.S. territory.

Some Americans never leave the U.S. in their lifetime. Initially, I thought of such people as cowards, believing that a life spent knowing only the U.S. would be incredibly dull. However, living in the U.S., I've realized that understanding and exploring this country is a formidable task in itself. The natural environment is vast, and the cultural experiences available are beyond what one can imagine. Even after a year, planning weekend trips and deciding where to go remains exciting. There's so much to see and many places offering tranquil experiences in nature.

Now, back to my current location in Dallas. It's about 10 p.m. here, which would be around 8 p.m. in California, so it feels like I've "lost" about two hours by coming here. However, when I return home after completing my work tomorrow, I'll "gain" those two hours back, making for a tightly packed and peculiar daily schedule. Previously, I visited Houston, and now I'm in Dallas, Texas. The state is known for its low gas prices and wide-open spaces, making the buildings seem scattered. The area I'm in is considered central, but it appears to use about three times more space than Irvine. Recently, as California's population declines and people move to tax-friendly Texas, even locals here feel the change, with housing prices continuing to rise.

I'm currently in the Frisco area of Dallas, known for having a large Indian population. An Indian colleague excitedly recommended a place for dinner, where we ate to our heart's content. He mentioned there's a significant Indian community here, hence the availability of many decent restaurants. I'm thinking of coming back for a trip with my husband and child next time! It's crucial to document these experiences, lest they be completely forgotten. While new travels excite and uplift me, the responsibility to perform my job safely and successfully also brings a considerable amount of tension. Tomorrow, I'll complete my tasks safely and return home to see my son. Let's go!
