The last month in Gaza and occupied Palestine has been a profoundly pivotal moment for humanity. I say humanity because simply put, we are all Gaza. Palestinians under blockade and relentless occupation are surviving while the odds remain stacked against them. While it appears impossible, Palestinians live. They find means to survive while getting rained on by US-funded bombs and airstrikes. We not only have an undeniable responsibility to ensure Palestinian survival, but we have everything to learn from Palestinians. We were created to love and protect one another. Palestinians teach us this immortal truth.
“Tell me how the war is destroying lives.”
This question is asked to Palestinians, organizers, and activists alike. It is asked with the answer already in the question itself. War is destructive. Occupation is devastating and highly disruptive to life. In occupied Palestine, women are forced to give birth at checkpoints while awaiting passage into areas with hospitals. Cancer patients are kept from entering zones with accessible chemotherapy treatment. Occupation, at the very least, severely inconveniences everyday life. At the very most it is a painful and disturbing daily presence. What Gazans are undergoing, however, is past an occupation. We have to be very clear with how we describe the conditions imposed upon Palestinians in Gaza because it is these conditions that we demand accountability and action for.
